We were fortunate enough to be at the airport when Sir Edmund Hillary arrived by helicopter. Apparently this was to be his last trip to the Solo Khumbu region (the area where Everest is located) because of his health. His helicopter stopped at the airport for a photo op. He had just returned from Khumjung (12,434'), a village where the Hillary school is located. I eventually trekked to that school to present the headmaster with 6 copies of a book of poems called "I Am a Rose" by Stacey Levitt. She was a former student of mine who was killed on August 30, 1995 when she was struck by a car. The book was published posthumously by her father, Ned Levitt. |
