Guidelines for Contributors of Manuscripts
CJH is in the process of formulating “Guidelines for Contributors”, in the interests of uniformity of style and references, and also to facilitate the production process of the Journal. These “Guidelines” will be added to the OHA website, but in the interim, the following are some basic requirements for articles submitted to CJH for consideration:

  • CJH prefers to receive submissions electronically, sent to cjh@herbalists.on.ca, with files converted to RTF format
  • Authors are requested to use minimal text formatting in the preparation of their articles, for example, using carriage returns ONLY for new paragraphs.
  • References are to appear as endnotes (NOT footnotes), following the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (also referred to as the Vancouver Style of citation).
    • When citing journal articles, the general format including punctuation is: Author(s).Title of article.Title of journal (in italics with no full stops); Year; Volume number; Page numbers.

For example: Harrison KL, Forster TH. Instruction to authors. Aust J Med Sci 1996; 17:45-47.
(There are standard abbreviations for medical journals that must be used and which can found in Index Medicus.)
    • When citing monographs, the format is: Author(s). Title: sub-title. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher; Year.

For example: Murray-Smith S. Right Words: A guide to English usage in Australia. 2nd ed. Melbourne: Penguin Books; 1990.
  • CJH prefers the use, when possible for authors, of superscript to denote endnote numbers in the body of the text.
  • Numbers used for statistics, figures, dosages, amounts, etc. should all be in numeric form i.e. "69%" and not spelled out.
  • Feature articles require an abstract.
  • Authors are asked to submit a biographical note with the article.
  • Authors are asked to submit, if possible, illustrative material (black and white drawings or photographs preferred, scanned, and including credits and reproduction permission).
  • Authors are asked to proofread their own submissions for accuracy with personal names, botanical/technical/medical (etc.) terms, to minimize the amount of production time required for extensive cross-checking.
