OHA Response to Bill C-51 (*pdf document)

    June 2007
As the result of our letters and calls, we have received verbal assurance from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care that the practice of herbal medicine will not be affected by the passage of Bill 171.

The Health Professions Regulation Act (1991) defines 13 controlled acts. It guarantees that practitioners in the public sector (regulated or not), can do anything other than those 13 acts. This means that the practice of herbalism can not become a restricted modality due to any changes implemented through Bill 171, or by the subsequent Transitional Councils for the new colleges.

We have requested this information in writing, and the letter will be made available to members as soon as it is received.

The possibility of restriction of access to specific herbs remains an issue. Bill 171 will have little direct impact on this, as it remains under Federal jurisdiction. However, the OHA and CCHA will continue to monitor the situation, and work to ensure our continued access to all herbs.

Thank you for your support and assistance,

Board of Directors, Ontario Herbalists Association
