Letter from the President, Christine Dennis
November, 2003
It is fall and don’t we know it! The cooler days and blustery winds are reminders of what is to come. As we put our gardens to bed for the winter we are getting geared up to focus on all the things that were put on the shelf at the start of the busy spring and summer months. May we all be able to finally take the time to clear our shelves once again.
This year’s AGM was held on September 21st at The Living Earth School in Toronto. Thanks to Michael Vertolli for the lovely large, bright room. The day began with herbal tea and chatting before we got right down to business. Some of the highlights were: Carol Little chaired the meeting, Lisa Hazanoff gave a year in review run down as well as where the next year is heading, Diane Tait gave a very positive treasurer’s report, the membership report was positive with a note being made regarding the increase in the number of Professional Members, and John Redden gave a report on the Journal as well as a plea for more articles. We had an in-depth review on where the herb fair currently is and where it is going, and the political update was given by Michael Vertolli.
The fabulous potluck lunch was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all for contributing.
After lunch Natale Ghent explained how to turn common herbs into delicious drinks in her Making Herbal Wines and Spirits talk. I am sure many of us are planning our first batch having now discovered how easy it is! The samples were very inspiring. Michael Vertolli’s talk on Herbal Defense against SARS, West Nile Virus and other Threats was very informative and thought provoking. And I did a demonstration on just how easy it is to make your own bath bombs.

The new board of directors was elected and the position of each member is:
- President myself, Christine Dennis,
- Vice-President Celina Ainsworth,
- Treasurer- Betty Donald,
- Secretary Angela Bossence,
- Political Watchdog Rick DeSylva,
- Professional Committee Liaison Helen Theodosiou,
and
- Journal Liaison - Kerry Hackett.
I am very excited about this new board and am really looking forward to the year together. Thanks to everyone who ran for the board.Elections were very close.
Many thanks to the resigning board members: Monika Ghent, Carol Little, Lisa Hazanoff, Michael Vertolli, Diane Tait and Victoria Foulger. Thanks so much for all your efforts and contributions. It was all greatly appreciated! I know that you will all still be heavily involved in other areas of the OHA and I look forward to working with you still.
On the agenda for the OHA this year is the herb fair and where it is going, the Journal is it to be the voice of herbalists across the country, continuing to build a herbal community, health insurance coverage of costs for seeing a Professional Herbalist, herb days and much more.If you have something that you want to see the OHA doing, drop us a line or pick up the phone. After all, it is your association too.
We are seeing a renewed interest in the OHA.This is obvious by the number of people who were interested in joining the board, old familiar faces turning up again and an increase in membership. This is wonderful! We have a great herbal community! Let’s keep it growing. Come on out and join the passion and fun! There are still lots of volunteer opportunities!
With change in the wind, let’s all get together and continue making this change a good one. It has been a busy yet productive year. May our next year be just as successful.
Christine Dennis is the new President of the Ontario Herbalists Association.
