Letter from the President,
Diane Kent

August, 2006

At the time of writing this, the Harbourfront Herb Fair is just behind us, and we are in the process of clearing up the final details. The day was lovely, the weather perfect, and we received many compliments as usual. Our sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered their time either before the fair with all the postering and advertising, or on the day of the fair helping to keep things running and promoting our association at the OHA tables. We can not continue to achieve such excellent results without you.

On a down note, I do have to say that member participation in the Herb Fair was disappointing this year. Those who came, worked extremely hard, but we were forced to look outside our association for many of the necessary volunteers. The day is a showcase for the OHA, and I hope we can count on more of you for support in the future.

In other news, the OHA continues to actively promote herbal medicine in Ontario. We remain a part of the Toronto municipal licensing talks, and continue to monitor events at all levels of government. The association was represented at an important insurance seminar for the Retired Teachers of Ontario, and will be at the Royal Botanical Gardens Herb Fair in August.

During the summer months, many of our professionals will be offering herb walks and workshops around the province. We hope you have will have had the opportunity to attend some of them. For information about herbal events and workshops coming up in the Fall, please check our web site at www.herbalists.on.ca.

Finally, a reminder that the annual general meeting is rapidly approaching. Richter’s have kindly agreed to host our meeting again this year. It will be held on Sunday September 10th, and you will find all the details later in this issue, or on our web site at www.herbalists.on.ca. This is your opportunity to tell us what you think, and to socialize with other herbal enthusiasts. There will be door prizes, a pot-luck lunch, and discounts at the Richter’s greenhouse. If you would like to propose any motions, nominate someone or volunteer for the Board, or have your voice heard by proxy, you should contact us by Thursday September 7th at the latest. As this summer draws to a close, it is time to plan next year’s garden, and plant the bulbs for spring. Please make the time to come to the AGM. Together, we are planting for the future of herbal medicine in Ontario.
