Letter from the President,
Diane Kent

November, 2006

The annual general meeting in September was quiet but enjoyable. Our sincere thanks to our host Conrad Richter and his staff for all their hard work. The reports from the Board were very positive, and I would encourage you to read the entire AGM Minutes available on the general member area of the web site. There is information about events, administration changes, our financial reports, and some of the numerous things we have achieved throughout the year.

I am pleased to inform you that most of the Board from last year have decided to stay on for a further term. Betty Donald, John Harrison, Sheila Waller-Kellen, and I will be joined by Rick DeSylva and Elaine Gurney. Marcia Dixon and Danette Steele have decided to step down, and I would like to thank them for all the work they have done for the OHA in the past year.

When this Board began last Fall, we faced a number of serious challenges. The biggest one by far, being financial. We were pleased to report at the AGM that this Board has managed, not only to operate well within our budget, but also to pay off outstanding bills. We should be well positioned in the coming year to continue to build on this success.

Another major achievement has been the introduction of Paypal to our web site. Our web master Harold Lass has done much of this as a gift to us, and the final version has just gone up. This represents a wonderful step forward for us. Anyone will be able to purchase or renew general memberships, and later buy merchandise online, and I will take this opportunity to remind you that the holidays are fast approaching. OHA memberships would make great gifts for friends who regularly borrow your Journal, or anyone you know who is interested in herbs.

As we progressed through the year, we found quite a few issues which needed to be dealt with, for which the Board simply could not find the resources or time. We have compiled these into a ‘Back 40' list, and it will be made available on the web site in a modified form. Anyone who would like to volunteer for any specific tasks on that list, will be welcomed by the Board. The list will be constantly changing as new ideas and projects are identified, and as some tasks become active (and completed!). In addition, so that members can be aware of the work being done, the minutes from each Board meeting will be made available under the general member login area. All members are welcome to comment by mail or email.

In the coming year, reactivating the Professional Committee will be an important part of the Board agenda, together with a membership drive, and some desperately needed new software that will make it possible for us to contact all of our members more easily. If you have anything else you would like us to address, please contact us at info@herbalists.on.ca.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season,

Diane Kent
