VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers can choose all or part of each task listed.
All approved costs associated with each task will be covered by the OHA.
Remember to track hours and include them on your volunteer form.
Please contact the board before starting any project, to ensure that we do not duplicate our efforts.

ADMINISTRATION

Website

  • Review “General Membership” section of the website and make recommendations.
  • Review “Professional / Student Membership” section of the website and make recommendations.
  • Once website is up-to-date a volunteer is needed to review periodically to add/remove information as needed, mainly the following sections – Home Page; OHA & Other Herbal Events; Herbs in the News;

Volunteer Gifts

The information on our Volunteer form reads as follows:
When hours total 50 or more, mail this completed form to the address above to receive a gift certificate for one free admission to an OHA seminar of your choice (maximum one certificate per year). For those unable to attend events, we will be adding a gift selection option in the future, so continue to save your volunteer hours.

  • Create a list of possible volunteer gifts with various monetary values. Can be donated items, OHA merchandise, etc., include audio tapes once available.
  • Design a gift certificate for free admission to OHA seminars.

Funding

  • Identify government funding opportunities for the OHA.

Provincial Government Liaison

  • Identify ways in which the OHA can build relationships and interact effectively with the Provincial Government.
  • Form a committee to work with the OHA board and implement. All committees are required to periodically report to an assigned liaison on the board of directors.

Extended Health Insurance Plans

  • Form a committee to plan and implement a campaign to get insurance providers to cover the services provided by herbalists under extended health plans. All committees are required to periodically report to an assigned liaison on the board of directors.

PROFESSIONAL / STUDENT MEMBERSHIP

Professional / Student Member Social Committee

  • Organize social gatherings for professional / student members 1-3x’s/year, e.g. summer corn roast, participation in charity event, etc., to help build a sense of community so we can start to get to know one another and can begin to support one another as a group.
  • Enlist the help of other members and form a committee. All committees are required to periodically report to an assigned liaison on the board of directors.

OHA Lending Library

  • Create email/letter to members requesting donations of quality herbal books they no longer need (suggest books can be dropped off at an OHA event – seminar, AGM, etc)
  • Make a list of books received and a wish list of recommended books to include in the library.
  • Develop a system to identify the books in stock; lending policies; and how to track books lent out.

Downloadable Seminar
The OHA periodically receives requests from various organizations to conduct a short seminar on herbal medicine for the benefit of their members.

  • Develop a ½ - 1 hour generic seminar that can be downloaded from the OHA website and used by professional members.
  • Develop a 10 minute version that professional members can add on to their own seminars.
  • Include a list of material that should be taken along to the seminars, e.g. OHA flyers.

Continuing Professional Development Form

  • Review existing Continuing Professional Development form and make recommendations as to how to simplify it and make it easier for professional members to fill out.

Increasing Membership

  • Submit a plan as to how to increase professional membership.
  • Establish ways to increase the benefits of membership.

External Herbal Conferences/Seminars
The OHA receives a number of flyers and emails requesting our professional membership be made aware of various conferences and seminars. Some may be of interest to our members.

  • Review each request thoroughly to verify quality.
  • Email information on any deemed noteworthy to professional members on a monthly basis or recommend they be added to the “OHA & Other Herbal Events” or the “Message Board” section of the website.

Herb Exchange

  • A coordinator is required to set up and run a herb exchange program amongst professional, student and general members.

MERCHANDISE

Herbal Book of Recipes
This book should contain information about the OHA, recipes for healing, household, perts, cosmetics, et., and short biographies about any contributing members.

  • Collect recipes and formulas from professional members.
  • Design the layout and cover for the booklet.
  • Get quotes for the printing of the booklet, and submit a draft and cost estimate to the board for approval.
  • Note: A few recipes have already been submitted and are posted on the professional section of the OHA website.

Seminar Audio Tapes

  • Listen to all OHA Audio tapes presently in storage to assess the quality.
  • Make recommendations as to which tapes could be marketed. Also give reason for any that have been rejected.
  • Create a contract for the speaker to sign giving permission to the OHA to market the tapes, include 10% royalty.
  • The OHA will then take tapes to a commercial enterprise that will transcribe, enhance quality, produce and label.
  • Note: Can be added to volunteer gift list.

Merchandise for Sale

  • Create a merchandise plan which includes quantities, costs, and rationale.
